The deceased, identified as Tukaram Tanpure, was working as a messenger with the State Bank branch of India in Rajgurunagar, about 40 kilometers from Pune, they said.
“Tanpure was working with us as a messenger and today afternoon, when he was sitting in one of the branch huts, he collapsed on the floor and was unconscious,” said Shridhar Iyer, the bank’s branch manager.
Tanpure was taken to a private hospital based in Chakan, where he was pronounced dead on admission, he said.
When asked if the branch was full of clients following the demonetization, Iyer said that since the morning there were people in the branch, however, it was controlled and manageable.
Dr. Amol Benke, a physician at Unicare Hospital in Chakan, said Tanpure was taken to the hospital at about 1.45 pm and was already dead.
“Prime-facie seems to be a case of cardiac arrest, however, the exact cause of death can be determined only after the autopsy,” he said.
The process of registering a case was underway, police said.
